CNC Machinist/Fabrication Specialist Aerospace Components - Clearfield, UT (Full-Time)


ES3 is a socially responsible, high-end engineering firm specializing in the design, test, and fabrication of aircraft components and systems, (2) the development of advanced high strength and corrosion resistant coatings, and (3) the application of computational methods for structural dynamic modeling.  ES3 has facilities in California, Utah, and Georgia.


General Summary

ES3 is currently recruiting a CNC Machinist to support multiple programs and long term growth at our Materials Research and Development Center (MRDC) located in Clearfield, Utah. The position requires the candidate to be skilled at setting up and operating both conventional and CNC Lathes, Mills, and/or other machines used for cutting, drilling, bending, and boring to produce precision metal parts and fixtures as specified on travelers, blueprints, drawing, templates, 3D models or pre-existing machine programs.  The position may require writing simple programs on CNC Lathes, Mills and Grinders using software systems such as Esprit or MasterCam. The successful candidate will be proficient at GD&T, capable of thriving in an ISO2001:9008/AS9100C environment, be responsible and professional. Must have experience with machining of high strength steel and aluminum.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; tramming heads
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes
  • Must be able to operate NC and CNC 3 - 5 axis mills using pre-existing programs but may also include programming simple projects, set up of tools and materials
  • Utilize precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometer, height gauges, etc. 
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices
  • Must be able to apply knowledge and appreciation of ISO/AS9100 Quality systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Fully capable on manual and CNC Lathe, 3 Jaw, 4 Jaw, OD, ID, threading, and gaging
  • Fully capable on manual and CNC Mill practices
  • Knowledge and limited experience using Esprit or MasterCam software with at least 1 year experience programming simple projects.
  • OD and Surface grinding capability is desirable but not a requirement
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, adhere to written procedures and experience with ISO/AS9100 requirements, standards, and compliance issues

Mill Turn CNC Machinist/Programming Specialist Aerospace Components - Clearfield, UT (Full-Time)

General Summary

ES3 is currently recruiting a Mill Turn CNC Machinist/Programming Specialist to support multiple programs and long-term growth at our Materials Research and Development Center (MRDC) located in Clearfield, Utah. The position will require writing simple to complex programs on a DMG Mori NT 4250 using software systems such as Esprit and MasterCam. Must have experience with machining of high strength steel and aluminum.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fully Proficient in CNC programming using Esprit and Mastercam Software for complex aerospace components
  • Recommend all cutting tools with the proper speed and feeds for CNC programs
  • Provide set-up sheets and instructions to machinists
  • Know how to open and work with Solid-models, Step-files, Iges-files

Welder - Clearfield, UT (Full-Time)

General Summary

ES3 is seeking a Welding Fabrication Specialist to perform fitting, cutting, welding, brazing, and soldering metal components made from various alloys such as; aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel, copper and lead. Fabricates or repairs products according to blueprints, or job traveler work orders.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read aerospace engineering blueprints and work with tight tolerances, complicated setups, and materials such as non-ferrous, nickel, copper and lead. 
  • Read and understand mechanical drawings with standard geometric tolerance designations.
  • Fabricate, weld and manufacture conformal anode fixtures for use in plating operations.
  • Cut, position, and clamp together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • Position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides, and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts or work orders. 
  • Lay out and mark points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates, and calipers.
  • Weld metal parts together, using both gas welding, brazing, soldering and any combination of MIG and TIG processes.
  • Perform related tasks such as oxy-acetylene or plasma cutting, grinding, soldering and brazing.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications using micrometers or calipers.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Work overtime as needed to meet production demands. 
  • May be trained to do prototype plating on landing gear parts as required. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Education and Experience Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a Trade School, Apprenticeship program, Military School, or On the Job Training Program in Fabrication and/or Welding.
  • 3-7 years of related experience, Aerospace Industry a plus. 
  • Experience and strong ability in reading blueprints and working with tight tolerances, complicated setups, and materials such as non-ferrous, nickel, copper and lead. 
  • Thorough and demonstrated experience/understanding of design and dimensional characteristics.  Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience performing intricate detailed work and the use of odd materials.
  • Must be able to read and understand mechanical drawings with standard tolerance designations.
  • Experience and thorough knowledge of all materials used in repair of Aircraft and their components a plus.
  • Able to read weld/assembly blueprints with an understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance callouts.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal pattern layout, geometry, and other necessary mathematics.
  • Knowledge and workability, content and chemical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. 
  • Able to weld ferrous and non ferrous materials, corrosion resistant steels, copper, monel, lead, brass or their alloys, in various sizes and shapes in overhaul, modification, repair and fabrication. 
  • Machining experience a plus.
  • Weld all assemblies into completed components using correct welding processes.

Thermal Spray Technician - Clearfield, UT (Full-Time)

Looking for an entry level position responsible for performing Thermal Spray coating and Water Jet cutting / material prep operations and other work as assigned by the Thermal Spray Lead or General Manager in a timely manner.  Will work in an ISO/AS9100C environment and follow shop work instructions, process specifications, and work within local, state and federal environmental, health and safety programs to ensure employee safety. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review job folder to verify areas to be masked, cleaned coated or cut.  Confirm all requirements prior to start of work
  • Perform HVOF thermal spray coating application per work instructions
  • Record all applicable data per work instructions
  • Ask Lead if unsure of work assignments
  • Report damaged parts to Lead or Supervisor
  • Report parts of poor quality to the Lead or Supervisor
  • Obtain the materials necessary to perform job – from the Lead if necessary
  • Appropriate and accurate recording of materials used per job
  • Appropriate use and maintenance of mask materials
  • Keep the work area neat and orderly at all times
  • Return any supplies not used to appropriate area
  • Report to the Lead or Supervisor when work assignment is completed
  • Assist in post process/receiving or anywhere else directed by Lead or General Manager 
  • Provide general part degreasing, masking and grit blasting
  • Work with Quality Management on manufacturing issues, inspection criteria, audits and resolution of findings 
  • Maintain strict document control standards and quality policy compliance

The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for creating and improving tooling and fixtures to be used in both aircraft repair and overhaul production tasks.  This engineer will largely facilitate engineering directives for related sheet metal, composite and machine fabrication to accept those tools. This is a great opportunity to work in a cross functional engineering environment while collaborating with structural repair & overhaul, quality and production engineers and maintenance personell to meet project goals and directives.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design tooling and fixtures, special machinery and/or equipment required for repair and overhaul production purposes of large military aircraft.
  • Design, install, qualify and troubleshoot production machinery and test equipment
  • Write machine specifications for the procurement of production machinery and test equipment
  • Work with standard principles of tool, jig and fixture designs and automation processes for various machine tool production operations. 
  • Prepare workable drawings or sketches.  Provide technical advice and assistance to aircraft mechanics, welders, painters.
  • Collaborate with structural repair and overhaul engineers to achieve desired production goals.
  • Interact with the operational workforce as well as other engineers, manufacturing and management personnel
  • Read and interpret drawing, specifications, and contractual requirements of production systems and fabricated items
  • Support multiple programs and manage priorities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Highly advance level use of SolidWorks for solid modeling concept and design
  • Technical Writing, SGML and/or XML authoring a plus
  • Mechanical Testing a plus
  • Material, Analysis a plus
  • CNC Programming and machining experience is a plus
  • Investigate production facility problems requiring engineering advice and assistance.
  • Develop protocols and plans to commence necessary corrective solutions.  
  • Make recommendations for tooling and fixture design changes.
  • Maintain files and records of  tool drawings, and for machines and produce technical information and related data.
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication equipment is a plus. 
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills (word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, etc.)

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelors Degree (Aerospace, Aeronautical, , Mechanical Engineering) from an ABET accredited university or college. Masters Degree is a plus.
  • 5-7+ years of related experience (C-5 Aircraft preferred)
  • Large military aircraft experience (C-130, Cargo, C-17, C-141 or other commercial Aviation structures and airframes) strongly desired.

  • Perform NDT inspection using automated inspection systems and manual techniques.
  • Evaluate and interpret NDT scans of metal and composite materials.

The position will require writing simple to complex programs on a DMG Mori NT 4250 using software systems such as Esprit and MasterCam. The position also requires the incumbent to be skilled at setting up and operating of conventional CNC and manual Lathes, Mills, and/or other machines used for cutting, drilling, contouring, and boring to produce precision metal parts and fixtures as specified on engineered blueprints, drawings, templates or 3D models.  The successful candidate will be proficient at GD&T, capable of thriving in an ISO9001:2008/AS9100C environment, be responsible and professional.  Candidates may be tested if past employment capability cannot be verified. Must have experience with machining of high strength steel and aluminum.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fully Proficient in CNC programming using Esprit and Mastercam Software for complex aerospace components
  • Recommend all cutting tools with the proper speed and feeds for CNC programs
  • Provide set-up sheets and instructions to machinists
  • Know how to open and work with Solid-models, Step-files, Iges-files
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs
  • Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; tramming heads
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening 
  • Fully proficient in operation of NC and CNC machines 3 - 5 axis mills. This includes programming simple to complex projects, set up of tools and materials
  • Fully proficient in the use of precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometer, height gauges, etc.
